Do You Dread Moving?

With Scott Mackey

We all dread the job of moving house. It’s usually a stressful event which you would rather not deal with, however moving doesn’t have to be so difficult when you have a good plan in place.

Scott Mackey, Principal of RE/MAX Precision, has a few simple tips that will help improve your moving experience and how to even subsidise the cost.

GET STARTED EARLY

As soon as you know the move is happening, start packing. Get some boxes and start packing away all non-essentials.

Scott Mackey says with experience, “this is where a lot of people get behind in the process. Some people can overthink the entire task of moving, whereas if you break it up by devoting a few hours every night, you can easily get a couple of rooms packed in a week”.

MOVE IN THE COOLER MONTHS

Summer is brutal in Queensland and it’s a hot and sweaty job when you’re lifting boxes and heavy furniture into a truck. Try to move in cooler months, like now – winter is great, although it gets darker earlier. Scott suggests that spring and autumn are a happy medium or early in the mornings or evenings in summer.

ZIP LOCK BAGS

Stock up on zip lock bags of all sizes. Major stores like Aldi, Coles and Woolworths all sell them fairly cheap in different sizes. Scott says, “these are perfect for things like jewellery, those dreaded allan keys for your furniture & many other small items that are easy to lose, spill or come apart”.

CLEAR LABELLING SYSTEM

It’s entirely possible to use five or so boxes just on one bedroom, so you need a clear labelling system so you’re not hunting through every box looking for your pyjamas or phone charger on the first night in your new home.

Scott says, “put all your essentials in one box, then mark it clearly i.e. “Master bedroom – Box #1”, so you know that the box marked #1 for each room is the first one to be unpacked and contains all the essentials”.

THROW THE RUBBISH OUT

Don’t be in a rush and pack what you could have dumped or cleansed. By following Tip 1, you’ll have time to see what’s been hiding in the top cupboard for the last 4 years that you don’t need.

TURN JUNK INTO CASH

Last but certainly not least, Facebook Marketplace or the Bundaberg Tender Centre are great ways to sell unwanted stuff… you may be very surprised at what someone is willing to pay!

We hope these tips are helpful to you in the years to come, but we also know how great it is never having to move again. If you’re looking for your forever home, give us a call today and we’ll provide the same expert advice you’ve come to expect from our team at RE/MAX Precision.
